Background of Mark's Gospel

I am anxious as I set out to read the bible without pretenses or expectations. My desire is to set my own path and chart my own course as I come across difficult passages and confusing phrases or situations.

I am beginning with the Gospel of Mark. Some believe that this was the first gospel recorded and that Matthew and Luke wrote their gospels after Mark's account had been in circulation for quite some time. Mark's audience is mainly to the gentile Greeks of the Roman Empire, as Jewish traditions are explained for the non-Jew.

I am also choosing to read the English Standard Version (ESV) on my iPad. I want something different from what I normally read which is the New International Version (NIV).

  • Historical Background:
    • Roman domination began in 63 BC.
    • Galilee and Perea were ruled by Herod
    • Judea, Samaria, and Idumea were governed by a Roman procurator, Pontius Pilate
    • The Jews were taxed on everything they owned - animals, fruit trees, homes, etc. and tax collectors were despised.
  • Religious Background
    • 586 BC was the destruction of Solomon's Temple, subsequently the number of synagogues multiplied by the time of Christ.
    • When the temple was destroyed in 70 AD, there were 480 of them in Jerusalem.
      • Wherever there were 10 adult male Jews in a town or village a synagogue was to be built.
      • These synagogues served as centers of education as well as places of worship. Public reading and expounding of the law was the leading function.
    • Three main Jewish groups at the time: Pharisees (Teachers in the Synagogue), Sadducees (Temple Worship), and Essenes (lived in seclusion).

Since Mark's gospel account is obviously about Jesus, my objective is to begin by discovering
  • Who is He?
  • What did He say?
  • What did He do?
  • Why did He come?

A Dry & Thirsty Land

Unfortunately, the title of this post is a reflection of where I am. Partly because I have had a busy 6 month schedule and have not adequately replenished myself along the way. I am taking Isaiah 44:1-5 to heart and especially verse 3, "For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants." Only I need God's Spirit poured out over my body!

I have recognized in myself that the busier I am the less I depend on His Spirit and that must change. I will be spending more time listening rather than doing. I am also challenging myself to begin reading the gospels with fresh eyes and without any pretenses. I have been in the ministry, in various roles, for 15 years. I am guilty of reading scripture through other people's lenses. I am going to make every attempt to remove those lenses and read the gospels as if it was the first time. I will post my discoveries here.

New Beginnings for an old blog...

From 2004 to 2006 I wrote a blog entitled Blogvotional. I was as transparent as I could possibly be in a public forum. One of the great missing pieces in our churches today is the lack of transparency,  openness, and vulnerability. I believe that I am at a point in my life where I need this type of outlet once again. I am starting a new blog since I cannot remember my log-in information for the old one. I am not sure how often I will post. My goal is 3-4 times per month, maybe more since I also write another blog at Lead2Serve.com.

I will continue to write from my leadership blog, but I have decided to start this new blog since the nature and topics of these blogs are completely different. My goal is to be as transparent as I possibly can with my thoughts and feelings on all things, specifically my faith and belief in God.
